My Indian Itinerary

This is just a short post to let everyone know about my schedule over the next few weeks.  It’s going to be a busy one, and I don’t know how often I will be online but you know I will try…   (I’ll probably be deleting this post once I can post the pictures and update the blog.)

Monday Feb 14, 2011 – depart New Delhi with a car and driver  for a 2 week trip… first stop Amritsar, India to visit the spectacular Golden Temple.

Tuesday Feb 15, 2011 – depart Amritsar to Chandigarh, capital of Punjab.

Wednesday Feb 16, 2011 – depart Chandigarh to Mandawa in Rajasthan to see some of the artwork around the city and the old fort.

Thursday Feb 17, 2011 – depart Mandawa to Jaipur, capital of Rajasthan in the semi-desert to visit the Amber Fort and some of the spectacular palaces. I will stay there one more day.

Saturday Feb 19, 2011 – depart Jaipur to Pushkar, one of the oldest cities in India and a sacred Hindu site and features many elaborate temples.  (It’s also home to the Pushkar camel fair in November when 50,000 camels converge on the city.)

Sunday Feb 20, 2011 – Pushkar to Bikaner, a desert city in Rajasthan surrounded by famous sand dunes

Monday Feb 21, 2011 – Bikaner to Jaisalmer  to visit the ‘Golden Desert City’,  with a full day camel safari and a night in the desert  at a desert camp ‘resort’ (I think I will be sleeping under the stars)

Wednesday Feb 23, 2011 – Jaisalmer to Jodhpur to visit the Umaid Bhawan Palace

Thursday Feb 24, 2011 – Jodhpur to Udaipur staying in the Pichola Haveli, a beautiful hotel overlooking the palace.  I will spend one full day in Udaipur.

Saturday Feb 26,2011 – I will board a train in Udaipur (sleeper class) to travel to Mumbai arriving there on the 27th.

Sunday Feb 27 – Wednesday May 2, 2011 – I will visit Mumbai

Wednesday March 2, 2011 – I leave for my 10 days of silent meditation at the Vipassana Meditation Institute in Igatpuri, India

Sunday March 13, 2011 – back to Mumbai to meet my friend Lindsay who is flying over from New York.  We will have almost 3 amazing weeks together exploring India.  Details are still being worked out but we will be visiting Mumbai, then travelling to Goa, then on to Jaipur for the Elephant Festival and Holi (which are at the same time). We will then move on to Delhi for a few days and then travel to Agra to visit the Taj Mahal before flying to Kathmandu for a couple of days before ending our visit together in Kolkata (Calcutta).   I haven’t made any specific plans after that point but do plan to travel more through West Bengal (Darjeeling) and Kerala (for the beaches along the Malabar coast) (and if there’s time the Andaman Islands) and  Tamil Nadu (Chennai).  I will then head down to Sri Lanka to visit the baby Elephant Reserve near Kandy and the city of Colombo.  I will be making my way back up the west coat of India to Mumbai where I am scheduled to fly out May 11, 2011 to Cairo (although that is still up in the air, depending on the political situation in the region.)
